3D Laser Scanning & Measured Building Surveys
3D Laser Scanning or High Definition Surveying facilitates the rapid collection and utilisation of large volumes of three dimensional data from buildings, structures, elevations, as-builts, landscapes, highways, facades, interiors and potentially hazardous or inaccessible areas. Our Faro Focus 3D machines capture an enormous amount of data in a very small amount of time as they scan at a rate of 50,000 points a second. Once the data has been collected from site, it is then processed through computer software to build a visualisation or model of the surveyed area. From the modelled data we then produce accurate measured building survey information including floor plans, elevations, sections and internal elevations for residential and commercial properties of all ages. Please see some examples below.
Some Examples
Please click on the PDF files below to view some examples of the many 3D Laser Scans and Measured Building Surveys we have undertaken for a range of different clients.
Tip: You can zoom in and out to view the surveyed areas in greater detail.
Barnsley
Food processing factory. This was laser scanned whilst the factory was in full operation in January 2024. The data was used to produce a factory floor plan and aid the design of a new drainage system.
Bury St Edmunds
This residential property was laser scanned in August 2023. Full floor plans, elevations, sections were produced. Following this the interior designer specified that all internal walls needed to be drawn in elevation and all electrical sockets and switches needed to be shown. This wasn't a problem as the 3D laser scanned had already collect all the data in the original survey.
Coxton Hall
Another residential property which was surveyed in July 2022 with nearly 300 scans carried out. All measured building survey information was required for a full renovation of the property.
Case Studies
Below you can see some examples of our 3D Laser Scanning work from around the country.
IPSWICH
In June 2017 we undertook a 3D laser scan and topographical survey for some private clients who were planning the conversion of a Grade II listed barn adjacent to their home near Stowmarket. As ever, a delicate and sympathetic restoration of the original structure would be key to gaining any potential permissions. Tom from the Target team was called upon to help begin the process of building a rigorous planning application.
In order for us to be able to produce the computer-generated 3D model of the barn and surrounding buildings you can see illustrated in some of the pictures below, multiple scans were required from differing heights and points, both inside and around the structure. All the data was then downloaded on to computer to build a comprehensive Point Cloud in Trimble Realworks. From this point cloud, a three-dimensional model and 2D plans and elevations can be extracted.
The point cloud can also be used to view the interior and exterior in the finest of detail from any vantage point or angle. The multi-coloured model below is an example of how the user can quickly gauge the different elevations around the surveyed area.
3D Scanning and more in Surrey
Earlier this year we embarked on a surveying project of a large property on the outskirts of London in leafy Surrey. With the help of our friends at BB Surveys we documented the buildings and grounds utilising 3D Laser scanning techniques, drone footage and GPRS measurements to build different layered computer models.
Get Interactive with our 3D Scans
If you click on the picture, you will be able view a portfolio of some of our 3D scans to date. Each folder contains a detailed 3D image of various buildings and their surroundings.
By using your mouse, or the direction buttons on your keyboard, you can manoeuvre yourself around the interactive map and view the buildings from every conceivable angle, both interior and exterior.

I first made contact with Tom and the team from Target Site Engineering & Surveys after a personal recommendation of their services two years ago. With the technical landscaping projects we undertake, precision and detail is critical from beginning to end. Target SES has been responsible for setting out and surveying many of our recent projects including Here East in Stratford, Level 10 and 16 Roof Gardens at Principle Place in Shoreditch, the Chelsea Royal Hospital Gardens, and the Silver Gilt Award-Winning Silk Road Garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Tom’s work is always meticulous, and that allows us to lay the foundations of our projects with absolute confidence. Willerby Landscapes and Target SES are currently working on further projects in London, Cambridge and Surrey, and I would highly recommend their services to prospective new customers.

A timely and accurate service is what we require from professional surveyors and Target SES provides that. Of all the surveying companies we work with on a regular basis, however, we find Target SES to be most progressive in terms of embracing the latest technology and taking on interesting projects where ’thinking outside the box’ is a must. They are good people to know and work with.

I have had the privilege of working with Tom for over ten years. Tom has supported us on a range of diverse construction projects from reconstruction of sections of the A14, Highways England Award winning Machine Control Project, to upgrading the A13 to facilitate the operation of the new deep water port for D P World at Shellhaven.
Target Site Engineering and Surveying has also worked with me on mineral and waste planning submissions with topographical surveys and volumetric analysis. Their services and commitment are second to none with a superb work ethic.

RG Carter has been using the services of Target Site Engineering and Surveys on approximately fifteen of our building projects for around three years now. Tom and his team have most recently worked with us on the brand new Ford Store in Harlow, as well as a Grain Store in Ipswich Docks, the MMDIC building at Colchester hospital and the STEM building at Walthamstow Forest College.
We call upon Target SES time and again because they offer a prompt, reliable service that’s always delivered to time and budget. Tom’s experience and depth-of-understanding of what’s required on each of our projects is invaluable to us, and that’s why I would highly recommend Target’s services to you.
